Self-Hardening Salt Clay

1 1/2 c. salt
4 c. flour
1 1/2 c. water
1 tsp. alum (as preservative if clay is not baked)

Mix the dry ingredients together in a plastic bowl; then add water gradually. When dough forms a ball around a spoon, knead the dough well, adding water if it is too crumbly. This clay can also be baked. Set the oven to 300° and bake small shapes 30-40 minutes or until hard. Can use to make handprints by first rolling out with a rolling pin, pressing hand firmly into clay and trimming edges with plastic knife. Etch in name with toothpick. Paint with poster paint once dry. Can also make small pinch pots, clay animals, cookies, or pretend food, snowmen held together with toothpicks or beads holed with nails.
